Village Ventures:’ Musica Donum Dei’

On Thursday 5 th May at 7.30pm there will be a family concert in Halam Church of Early English Music: ‘Ring a Ring a Roses’, recreating the spirit of Old England with baroque instruments - tunes, songs, humorous anecdotes, verses & explanations of the origins of the music by professional musicians. Tickets £6 & £5 - from Bev Perks (812181) or Karin Davis (815854). Proceeds to be donated to the fund for maintaining the church.

Village Ventures: ‘Mood Indigo’

Jazz band ‘Mood Indigo’ will be performing in Farnsfield Village Hall on Friday 20 May at 8pm. Tickets cost £6 and are available from Michelle Atkinson Tel: 01623 883098.

Halam Charity Ball

On Saturday 11 June: our Summer Ball will be held in a marquee on Halam School field from 7.00pm until 1.00am. A champagne & strawberry reception, with string quartet, will be followed by dinner at 8pm served by the excellent Andrea Henson Catering Company. The menu consists:

Halam & District Women’s Institute

The W.I. next meets on Tuesday 3 May in Halam Village Hall at 7.30pm, when the Annual General Meeting will be held. National Conference resolutions will be discussed and submitted: 1) Milk prices 2) Environmental action to reduce waste and conserve resources. On Tuesday 17 May the W.I. will hold its annual birthday party at Hockerton Farm Restaurant. Visitors and new members will be made most welcome. Contact Glenys Herbert: 01636 812335.

Annual Parish Meeting: 14 April, 2005 7pm

Present: S Bust, G Herbert, A Fraser, A Paris, D Parrish, I Sharman; Apologies: N. Armstrong

Chairman’s Report : Simon Bust reviewed various meetings over the past year: council; special meetings; parish plan; planning, & those relating to the village hall. Disappointments include the lack of the footpath up Halam Hill, and approval of the extension to Holbeck Cottage. C. Charnley of Notts. CC Highways was unable to attend the meeting due to government elections. Issues to raise with him are: speeding problems through village; drains; poor repair of Halam roads. It was agreed to invite him to a later meeting. The Parish Plan has been a major project for the village and is now an important guide document for the P. C. which is now working through the Action Plan, and reviews progress monthly. Work is being done on the PPP (footpaths) scheme with the C.C.; Neighbourhood Watch is being revitalised; a scheme for a new village hall is being assessed. The Chairman thanked all who attend meetings and those taking an active part in the village community.

Open Meeting : Issues: - 1) Footpath up Halam Hill, 2) Speeding & interactive flashing signs 3) Community speed watch 4) Halam footpath group - in ‘top layer’ for C.C. PPP scheme 5) Bus shelter cleaners thanked & those who help tidy up in the village.

Parish Council Meeting, 7.30pm 14 April 2005

Present : as above

Matters Arising : 1) Parish Plan: a) District Council has written that Parish Plan is under consideration; & will ‘respond in due course’; If not forthcoming a D.C. rep. will be asked to discuss this at P.C. 2) Local police to be invited to a future meeting.

3) A village hall letting conditions and management arrangement will be drawn up and publicised – village news & village notice boards. 4) A social committee is now set up to coordinate and facilitate village events; timetable to be published next month. 5) A brief outlining planning process and the parish’s part in it to be produced – AP 6) SB to talk to Will at the pub re parking.

7) Di Parish will investigate educational courses for the village.

Code of Conduct : Issues raised by government’s consultation document generally agreed with; no action needed at present.

Notice Board/New Litter Bin : Notts C. C. to look at sites.

Halam Footpath No.1 – diversion of footpath along concrete road to Manor Fields is being formalised. No action required.

Open Meeting : Matters raised: Highbird extension - no objection from an immediate neighbour.

Correspondence : 1) Building Better Communities – Halam was unsuccessful in obtaining an award 2) Endurance Ride – passing through village Sunday 24 April, 9-11am

Planning : Highbird, The Turnpike, Halam – Erection of single storey rear extension: passed unanimously; Planning Decision: Beckside Cottage – two storey rear extension: passed.

Finance : Resolved to pay: new minute book; architect’s fees (plans etc. for alterations for disabled act); fire check and new extinguisher; village hall cleaners; dog bin (emptying of); entertainment licence (Bramley advert); re-issue RCC cheque.

Public Transport in Halam

The Parish Plan identified various issues re Public Transport in Halam including a) frequency of buses b) a desire for a direct bus to Nottingham or improved connections c) publishing bus timetables. T hose people interested in lobbying for better services please contact Elaine Gathercole - either drop a note in at Manor Stables, Radley Road, telephone: 01636 813760 or e-mail Elaine@egathercole.freeserve.co.uk .

Our website (www.halam.org.uk) has information on times of buses through Halam and these are publicised on the bus stops outside the pub and school. Future newsletters will give further details of services. Please note changes to the Southwell/ Newark service means there are now no useful buses on this route from about 1430 onwards and at any time on Sundays.
