Halam Charity Ball

We all had a fantastic time – good food (Andrea Henson); well-run bar (thank you Mike Kirridge & Will from The Waggon); fabulous marquee decorated beautifully by Jackie Thornewill; an excellent string quartet, band and disco; and some fabulous frocks - what a party! No-one complained, but just in case, apologies to anyone disturbed by the music. And to crown a really successful evening we raised £1600 for Macmillan and over £900 for Halam School due to some wonderful fund-raising events and extremely generous individual donations!

Thank-you Margaret & John Hill who donated all the strawberries (Hill’s Farm Shop); Andrew Morris who donated a day at Silverstone in a Ferrari; Crink Lane & Hollybeck Nurseries; JMT Design; Suzi Anderson who created magnificent tickets and menus, and all the other donations and time and effort given to make this such a success.

Well done everyone who came and supported us, and thank you.

To browse/order photos see website: www.andrisphoto.co.uk and click on events. Prints cost £10 and can also be obtained via Ian Anderson (813913)

Jackie Thornewill’s own vase and flower arrangement went missing from the bar area of the marquee. We were happy to give away the table decorations & balloons but would be grateful if this vase could be returned. Thanks!

Halam School

Everyone is invited to Halam School Sports Day and Summer fete on Wednesday 20th July at 2pm, weather permitting. Previous pupils of the school remember the ‘past pupils race’, so don't forget your running shoes!

On Wednesday 13 July the Key Stage 1 performance and whole school exhibition of work and art from the ‘Take One Picture’ project will take place.  The KS1 performance will be at 1.45pm. Following on from this there will be an opportunity to look around the school to see the work that has been taking place as part of the whole school art project. The school will also be open from 6.00pm – 7.00pm for people to visit the exhibition of work. Everyone from the village is most welcome to attend these events.

Village Volunteers

In the Parish Plan questionnaire several unidentified respondents said they would welcome help accessing prescription or other medical services; shopping; attending a day centre; meals on wheels; gardening; social services; a friend to check they are alright; a community car scheme. A number of villagers volunteered to help meet these needs and gave their contact details.

The Parish Council has taken legal advice via NALC. Although this is inconclusive it suggests that the Parish Council may not be acting within its powers to organise a befriending scheme and there could be problems of legal liability should any harm come to either the volunteer or the recipient of help. If anyone in the village with legal expertise could help identify a way forward can they please contact me?

In the meantime, the only way forward is to encourage the spirit of neighbourliness which already exists in the village to ensure that those who may need help get it in an informal way and to remind both those who would welcome help and any prospective volunteers of the Southwell Live at Home Scheme which I mentioned in an earlier newsletter. It is a volunteer based scheme which offers support and friendship to older people in the community who may be isolated and unable to get out and about as they used to.

If you are an elderly person who would like to become a member of the scheme, or someone with an hour or two a week to spare to become a visitor, please contact the Co-ordinator at Southwell & District Live at Home Scheme, Southwell Methodist Church, Prebend Passage, Westgate, Southwell, Notts. NG25 0JH, or ring 01636 816565. The office is manned on Tuesday afternoons and Thursdays.
