Richard & Edith Brown celebrated their golden wedding anniversary on the 10 th March. They renewed their vows at a lovely service in Halam Church on Sunday 12 th March to commemorate 50 wonderful years together.

‘The Newstead Abbey Singers’
Saturday 29 April in Halam Church at 7.30pm. Tickets £6 (including glass of wine) Funds raised will go towards very badly-needed interior replastering and painting of our Church.

Halam W.I. Fundraising Walk & Lunch
Thursday 20 th April commencing at 10am from Halam Village Hall. Tickets from Rita Rippon (Tel: 01636 812390) or Glenys Herbert (812335) cost £5 including lunch at 12.30pm. Non- walkers are welcome: Proceeds towards fund-raising for Halam W.I. 50 th birthday celebrations.

Verdi Requiem
Southwell Choral Society will be presenting Verdi’s fantastic Requiem in Southwell Minster on Saturday 13 May at 7.30pm. Tickets: £12.50/£10/£8 - from Penny at ‘Music in the Yard’ Tel: 01636 814411. The Choral Society are looking for sponsorship and advertising for this spectacular but expensive concert. Parish Council Meeting, 9 March 2006

Matters Arising:
Parish Website www.halam.org.uk – ARP reported that there is no funding or assistance available from D.C. for villages who have already set up their own websites.

Parish Plan:
AF reported that Parish Plans will carry weight in the future re local planning issues and possible funding for parish projects

Design Statement:
Working Group meeting - 20 March.

Community Speed Watch:
Clerk to write to J. Whitaker re strict adherence to police guidelines in running scheme, and to confirm insurance on P.C.’s policy.

Village Christmas Tree:
To be discussed next month

Licensing for Village Hall:
Agreed to apply for basic (free) premises licence (12 events per year not including private parties). Events organisers must apply for liquor licences.

Mr. Grant, N&S District Council’s Parks & Community Manager, addressed the meeting re possible grants available for new village hall/open space. Potential capital grants are available from the Lottery fund, landfill tax credit schemes, DEFRA, Charitable Trusts and the D.C. It is unlikely funds for maintenance or running costs of a new hall would be available. He recommended a hall trust with trustees & management committee was set up.

Open Meeting :
Mrs Simmons reported that the C.C. have a scheme allowing Christmas tree lights to be run off a connection to the street lights - investigate further.

C.Cllr. Bruce Laughton gave the meeting information re concessionary bus passes for Notts residents aged 60 or over on 1 April 2006, allowing free travel on buses, trains & trams. For further info contact the D.C. on 01636 655319

ARP to attend an N&S Planning Seminar on 16 March at Calverton.

New Street Lighting at The Turnpike Crossroads – several options of proposed increased lighting will be presented to the P.C. at next meeting – 6 April 2006

Planning :
1. Hill Farm Barn, Halam Hill – Erection of single storey garden room – passed unanimously.

2. Briar Croft, School Lane – Erection of 2 storey & single storey side & rear extensions – passed unanimously.

3. Strickland Farm, The Turnpike – Conversion & extension of existing buildings to new dwelling – S. Bust declared an interest & withdrew; passed unanimously.

It was agreed to write to Planning Dept re materials and windows of extension at Holbeck Cottage, Radley Road.

Planning Decisions :
Machins Farm – New orangery – application withdrawn

Finance :
Halam Parish Partnerships (footpaths) – update and expenses claim received from E. Gathercole; passed unanimously; thanks expressed for work & progress.

Agreed to pay: NALC subscription; Hall cleaners; Clerk’s wages; Increase in rate for cleaners noted & accepted.

Agreed to amend the Financial Regulations 17.1 – “from time to time” becomes “every four years”.

ARP reported sales of Halam calendar from D. Joyce and himself had raised £100 towards a new village notice board. Thanks to all who supported this venture.

Proposed New Village Hall:
Details of location/size/layout of the project, plus an outline business plan should be presented to the parish prior to any referendum. NA to liaise with Mike Evans re planning matters; ARP & AF to progress figures with input from Peter Thompson and Tom Pulfrey. ARP to draft letter to Paddy Tipping MP re heavy redemption costs of current Public Works Loan Board mortgage.

Date of Next Meeting : - Please note: Annual Parish Meeting: Thursday 6 April at 7.00pm followed by the April Parish Council Meeting at 7.30pm. This is a week earlier than usual because of Maundy Thursday.

This will take place on Monday 3 April at 7.00pm in Halam Village Hall – Everyone is welcome to attend.

Cluster Maundy Thursday Supper

7pm in The Village Hall All are invited to attend. It will be followed by a candlelit procession for Communion in St. Michael's Church.

Halam & District Women’s Institute

The W.I. next meets on Tuesday 4 April at 7.30pm in Halam Village Hall. The speaker, Mr Ramsey, will be giving a talk entitled ‘The Crown Jewels’. The competition is ‘A Bejewelled Item’. New members will be made most welcome.

On the 9 th May Halam & District W.I. will be holding a party to commemorate our 50th birthday! We would be delighted if any former members would contact Glenys Herbert Tel: 812335, in connection with this, which will be held in Halam Village Hall.
